year in lockdown

A mum-of-three has been forced to put her dog on a diet after lockdown saw the pooch
almost double in size, leaving him struggling to walk for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Geraldine Cormack, 51, from Bristol, was horrified to discover that her beloved pet, Paolo, a
five-year-old chocolate Labrador, had expanded from sleek to obese during the pandemic.
Paolo, who Geraldine has had since he was a puppy, ended up nearly double his
recommended size, weighing 8st - some 3st 4lb heavier than he should have been.
Geraldine, a full-time carer for her son, Harley, 15, and also mum to Redley, 22, and Lewis,
17, said: Its awful for Paolo, he struggles to walk longer than 10 minutes.
Its been a combination of inactivity during lockdown and medication he is on to stop his
seizures.
Either way, we need to get him back down to a healthy weight as its not good for him to be
so big.
Geraldine also has another dog, Gizmo, a ten-year-old Yorkie, who is a healthy weight, and
says Paolo was a fit pup until 2020.
She said: Ive had Paolo since he was about 10 weeks and hes always been lean and healthy
but, over the last couple of years, there were a number of factors that led to his weight gain.
It just sort of crept on and I didnt realise how bad it had become until I took him to the
vets two weeks ago.
Suffering with seizures, Paolo was put on medication in December 2019 which Geraldine says
increased his appetite and, when the pandemic struck in March 2020, the mum struggled to
take her pooch on walks.
She said: I have my son to think about - Harley who has global developmental delay and had
to shield during Covid.
"And on top of that, I have my own health issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), which is a serious lung condition and leaves me constantly breathless when
moving around, so I had to shield too.
Because of that, we couldnt go out to take the dogs for a walk and that really affected
Paolos weight."
Before lockdown, Paolo went for daily walks ranging from 30 minutes to three hours long.
But after the pandemic hit, the pooch did not go for a walk for just over a year and now he
struggles to walk for longer than 10 minutes.
Geraldine said: "We have a garden and Gizmo was very happy to race around there - he's so
small and has the mentality of a puppy so he didn't gain weight.
"But with his medication, Paolo didn't want to move.
"My sons were isolating with me so they couldn't take him out for walks so there was
nothing we could do."
It meant that poor Paolo gradually grew bigger.
Geraldine said: "Recently - two weeks ago - I took him for a check-up at the vets because I
noticed he was putting on weight and they mentioned that they were very concerned about
him."
To Geraldines horror, the vet revealed that not only was Paolo overweight, he was double
the size that he needed to be.
She said: He was 8st and ideally he should be around 4st 10lb.
I was very upset to hear how big he had gotten but its hard to control his hunger with the
medication he is on.
Ive become very strict with him since he went on his diet.
Snacks are now banned in the house to help Paolo shift the pounds and while he waits for his
special diet food to arrive, once a day Paolo eats three-quarters of a tin of wet dog food
mixed with a dry food mixer.
And as lockdown restrictions have eased, Geraldine has been taking him out on 10-minute
walks every other day again.
She said: The only treat he gets is in the morning and evening. I give him the meat out of a
sausage roll - his all-time favourite snack - and hide his tablets in it.
Its the only way to get him to take his medication.
Geraldine hopes that cutting out the extra dog treats and getting Paolo more exercise will
help him shed the weight.
She said: We live near a park, so we have been taking him there for walks. It s heartbreaking because before the pandemic hed be racing ahead, running laps around the park
and playing with other dogs.
Now he walks very slowly and cant go for longer than 10 minutes due to the excess weight
he is carrying.
Taking him for another vet appointment this week, the mum is hopeful that her poochs
transformation is possible.
Geraldine said: Hes lost one kilo - that's 2lbs - which is great so far. Its still early days, but
it means were on the right track.
I just want my pup to be healthy and happy.
Plenty of us have put on a bit of extra weight during the lockdown months, and dogs are no
exception.
Penny Morgan, a PDSA vet, said: Geraldine and Paolos story is sadly not uncommon and vet
practices across the UK hear the same thing every week as obesity impacts the lives of
millions of UK pets.

(mas)
