Baby girl born with 5cm GROWING TAIL ‘covered in hair and skin’ in extremely rare medical case

Doctors have successfully removed a “true tail” from a newborn baby girl – and the condition is thought to be incredibly rare.

The infant was born via caesarean delivery at a rural hospital in north-eastern Mexico.

According to the case study entry in the Journal of Paediatric Surgery, “the child had no previous history of radiation, teratogen exposure, or infections during pregnancy,” and she was born to “two healthy parents” in their late twenties.

The tail-like structure was measured at 5.7 cm in length, with a diameter between 3 mm and 5 mm in all its length, it was also cylindrical and was pointed towards the end.

Doctors noted the tail was covered with hair and skin and the baby cried when the structure was pinched by a needle.

Medical professionals then performed a Lumbosacral X-ray but found no evidence of anomalies or bone structures inside the tail, meaning the tail was not a vestigial tail but a “true tail” – an extremely rare occurrence.

Doctors established there were no heart or hearing problems, urinary tract malformations, or vesicoureteral reflux.

Her MRI also revealed no cerebral anomalies, and was negative for posterior dysraphism, with the spinal cord and spinal cone of normal characteristics.

Once doctors ruled out spinal dysraphism the young patient was re-assessed by a paediatrics and general surgery team at two months of age.

Satisfied there had been adequate weight gain and growth for age, the tail structure had increased 0.8 cm in length.

With no evidence of skin lesions a decision was made to remove the tail and reconstruct the area by Limberg plasty.

The patient was discharged and no complications have been reported since.

According to the journal: “The presence of tails in humans is extremely infrequent. In the most recent review by

(eon)
