Am Ende gab es für den Meeressäuger keine Hoffnung mehr. Ein Zwergwal, der sich in der Londoner Themse verirrt hatte, ist am Montagabend eingeschläfert worden. Obwohl sich Tierschützer tagelang um ihn gekümmert hatten, war der Gesundheitszustand des Wals zu schlecht.

SO nah wollten Julie McSorley und ihre Freundin Liz Cottriel den Walen nicht kommen. Die beiden Frauen waren mit ihrem Kajak vor der Küste von Avila Beach (US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien) unterwegs, als plötzlich das Wasser unter ihnen zu brodeln begann. Dann schoss ein Buckelwal aus den Fluten – und ihr Boot schnellte in die Höhe.

Hobby photographer Jenny Dean managed to shoot the action last month as the humpback dived out of the water in Etty Bay near Innisfail, far north Queensland. The mother-of-three, who is a clinical nurse and midwife, was on a whale-watching trip with her husband when they spotted the amazing mammal in the water. It could have been Migaloo, thought to be the only all white humpback whale in the world. Migaloo is believed to migrate up the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to the warmer waters of Tropical North Queensland. "It was an amazing experience, incredible to see that huge creature propel out of the water with such ease and agility. Even better to catch some pictures and they even worked out OK which considering the boat was rocking and Migaloo was very fast and unpredictable is double lucky."

Besieged theme park SeaWorld has launched its first major PR attack against Blackfish in an attempt to offset almost 12 months of damage caused by the chilling documentary, which chronicled the aquarium's 39-year treatment of killer whales in captivity. Hit with cancellations from high-profile performers and school field trips, coupled with aggressive animal activist campaigns and a tarnished image, the Orlando-based marine park has placed full-page ads in eight of the country's largest newspapers, rationalizing their whale practices. The 'Open Letter from SeaWorld's Animal Advocates' which appears in today's Orlando Sentinel, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today, among other papers, defends the way SeaWorld cares for the 29 whales in its corporate collection. Although it doesn't identify Blackfish, the ad is the first step in the company's move to rebut the wide-spread criticisms raised by the film, such as allegations that captivity turned orca Tilikum - the world's largest whale held in captivity - into a killer, according to The Orlando Sentinel SeaWorld has previously dismissed the doco as propagandist and inaccurate. 'Tili' was responsible for the deaths of three people, most notably that of trainer Dawn Brancheau, who he grabbed and dragged underwater until she drowned during a 2010 training session in Florida.
